Horology is an art, and the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) is undoubtedly one of its finest showcases. Each year, this prestigious event celebrates the most exceptional creations in the world of watches, and 2024 is no exception. For watch enthusiasts, this 24th edition of the GPHG promises once again to highlight the excellence and innovation that drive watchmaking houses.
An Exceptional Selection
The GPHG Academy, composed of 980 members from key sectors of the watchmaking industry, faced the challenging task of shortlisting 90 timepieces out of the 273 submitted by 146 brands. These pieces, divided into 15 categories, are vying for one of the 20 prizes to be awarded, including the highly coveted Grand Prix de l’Aiguille d’Or. These watches are not just instruments for measuring time but true works of art, each telling a unique story of craftsmanship and innovation.
A Traveling Exhibition: Horological Art at the Heart of the World
For watch lovers, the GPHG is not just a competition; it is a global celebration of horology. The 90 shortlisted watches will embark on a world tour, offering enthusiasts a unique opportunity to discover them up close.
The tour will begin in Hong Kong from September 28 to 30, at Christie’s new headquarters in the Henderson Building. It will then continue to Ho Chi Minh City, from October 9 to 11, in the stunning setting of the Saigon Opera House, in partnership with The Hour Glass. The watches will then cross the Atlantic to be displayed in New York, at Watches of Switzerland, from October 18 to 21. Finally, the journey will conclude in Geneva, at the Rath Museum, from October 30 to November 17, before the winning pieces are exhibited at the University Library of Bucharest from November 21 to 23.
A Highly Anticipated Awards Ceremony
The excitement will peak on November 13, during the awards ceremony at the Théâtre du Léman in Geneva. This event, broadcast live on the GPHG website and by various media partners, will reveal the winners of the 2024 edition. For watch enthusiasts, this date is a must, as it promises to crown the best horological creations of the year.
A Jury of Experts and a Cultural Mission
The GPHG is not just a simple competition. Since its inception in 2001, and under the aegis of a foundation recognized as a public utility since 2011, it has been dedicated to promoting horological art on an international scale. This mission is supported by numerous partners, including the main one, FGP Swiss & Alps.
The GPHG Academy, established in 2020, plays a crucial role in this mission. Comprising hundreds of members, it includes key figures from the watchmaking sector, organized into colleges. These experts participate in all stages of the selection process, from proposing models in the spring to the final vote in the autumn.
For watch lovers, the GPHG is much more than an annual event. It is a global celebration of horological art, a tribute to the talent and creativity of artisans who push the boundaries of excellence each year. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to discover the jewels of contemporary watchmaking as they make their way to a city near you.
